Altar Series
The Book of Susie: Stories of Life, Love and Liberation

This piece is based on the design of an African ceremonial garment called an Egungun. It celebrates the spirit, life and memory of Susie Sumner Revels Cayton - author, editor, activist and philanthropist. Attached to a quilted foundation, are 36 quilted panels made from carefully selected fabrics that reflect Mrs. Cayton’s African heritage, Southern roots, personal traits, achievements and economic status.
