Altar Series
The Book of Susie: Stories of Life, Love and Liberation

2021; Mud Cloth, African Batiks, brocade, cottons, vintage feed sack fabric, denim, silk, lace, ribbon, photo transfers, buttons, beads and cowrie shells; 39” x 39”

This piece is based on the design of an African ceremonial garment called an Egungun. It celebrates the spirit, life and memory of Susie Sumner Revels Cayton - author, editor, activist and philanthropist. Attached to a quilted foundation, are 36 quilted panels made from carefully selected fabrics that reflect Mrs. Cayton’s African heritage, Southern roots, personal traits, achievements and economic status.
